Iam a fool who loves foolish things. That’s why I love this time of year and in particular this day: April Fools’ Day. It’s the one day of the year when being a fool — or acting like one — is considered an asset as opposed to some sort of liability. It’s a day when practical jokes — pranks, if you prefer — are popular. I’m not a fan because at some level they involve having fun at somebody else’s expense. At their core, they’re mean. But any sort of joke where I don’t have to think too much, I’m the guy to have in your audience. Kramer’s crazy antics on Seinfeld still make me laugh so hard I can’t breathe. Puppies and kittens doing foolish things are a surefire hit with me. Bugs Bunny singing opera or playing baseball? They never get old.
Of course, there are well-funded and richly produced corporate April Fools’ jokes, mostly on video these days, which sometimes land as intended but just as often come off as trying a little too hard or trying to be a little too hip. Instead, they end up seeming contrived. Alternatively, they are thinly veiled sales pitches for something they really want to sell me — an absolute no-no on April Fools’ as well. If the company simply focuses on making me laugh, and succeed, they may just win me over as a prospective customer somewhere down the road.
However, there is one company — WestJet — that consistently and seemingly effortlessly knocks out winners year after year. One of my personal favourites is Kargo Kids,2 which, I suppose, tells you something about WestJet’s sense of humour. It certainly tells you something about mine, too.
Now that you know Kargo Kids is an April Fools’ joke, you can likely guess its punchline. It’s still worth watching, though. Kudos to WestJet for keeping the pacing tight and the production values high. I can’t wait to see what their creative minds conjure up this year.
Trolls, that is. Well, not exactly trolls but those who might try and spoil the nice little party we all have going here on Bluesky. Please let me exemplify this with a recent experience of mine, prefaced with a little background.
Avgeeks — who are the lifeblood of the BluFly community — seem to be growing here in numbers by leaps and bounds. Fantastic! If you’re one of the recent arrivals, I would like to add yet another hail and hearty welcome to the many you have undoubtedly already received. Based on my firsthand experience over the past year or so, I believe you will be pleased at what you find here.
That said, it’s also vital to the long-term future of this community to attract legitimate aerospace industry players as well. Nothing quite grinds my gears like seeing corporate heavyweights and aviation startups alike still using Twitter and its poxy ilk to get their message out — as if it were their only alternative. That's a losing proposition unless, of course, there is some vast, undiscovered market for F-35s which consists of porn bots, conspiracy theorists, angry people, and accounts not touched in ten years.
Therefore, whenever I see such an industry player arrive on Bluesky, I’m thrilled. Wingcopter showed up relatively recently, for example, as did Heart Aerospace, amongst others. Given they are, to date, not using their domain names as their handles,3 I independently made contact with both of them to make sure they are actually that which they claim to be. Other, similar players have also arrived and are using their domain names as handles, which also qualifies them as ‘trusted’, at least in an informal sense.
When an organisation along these lines shows up, I like to help spread the good news with a post and also mark the occasion by adding it to the BluFly 🛩️ Verified Aviation Starter Pack.4
Now, back to the trolls: I was recently dismayed to see a helicopter manufacturer — the name of which you would likely recognise — arrive here on Bluesky only to discover they’re likely not what they first appear to be. The clue was the domain name they were using as their Bluesky handle: it was ever so slightly different than the actual domain name for that manufacturer. You really have to look closely to see the difference. The slightly tweaked domain name being used on Bluesky, of course, points to a junky, completely irrelevant, parked domain. It’s a good thing it’s nothing worse than that.
Furthermore, their header details and posts are such that they really make you think, at first, you’re looking at a legit profile for the helicopter manufacturer. It really comes off as an unrepentant intent to deceive, which makes it particularly sinister. I have followed up with the manufacturer to alert them but have not heard anything back to date.
Here are the action items for us all: I urge you to be on the lookout for both new, legitimate aerospace players who have recently arrived here on Bluesky. When you find them, make sure you follow them, like and repost their posts, and also make sure your followers know about them. However, equally important, I also urge you to pay close attention to those who are trying to fool you into believing they are something they are not and take action appropriately.5
This past month, I had the good fortune to stumble across the exquisite air-to-air photography of Jon Davison as featured on his Eye in the Sky Productions website. As a result, we featured his Hail Storm6 story on the 25th, which describes a photo shoot of an absolutely immaculate Gloster Meteor over Australia. If you didn’t take a look at it then, do yourself a favour and take a look now. You’ll be glad you did.
I was so taken with Jon’s photography, I approached him about the April cover, the exquisite results of which you can see above. As I said to Jon when I found this shot in his portfolio: “ I simply love the juxtaposition of the very modern jet with artefacts which could easily be turn-of-the-(last)-century. I also like the sunset, which connotes the Australian autumn.” The latter makes the image timely, as well.
In the spirit of the classical trompe l’oeil, turns out this photo is not what it first appears to be. I’ll let Jon take the story from here:
“The Pilatus PC-24 ‘super versatile jet’ was launched to the world’s press in May 2013. At the time, Pilatus wanted it pictured in some real-life type scenarios, not 3D renderings — they needed a total of nineteen images of their new aircraft in a variety of conceivable future applications. The trouble was the aircraft did not exist, and did not until at least 2014. Only the fuselage had been made as a sales mock-up for the Geneva launch. I still had to create realistic depictions photographically, not rendered in 3D.
So, I shot a 50 cm plastic model they had constructed. The model was photographed with lighting that had to match the lighting of existing backgrounds of mine or ones Pilatus had supplied. In this particular frame, I had previously photographed one of their PC-12 aircraft at a farm in Garah, New South Wales, Australia. I took the shot of a PC-12 and replaced it with the image of the PC-24 model. In Photoshop, I matched the lighting and angles, created aerials, flaps, stairs, and all the rest. The end result depicts a scenario into which their new PC-24, with its off-road capability, could easily fit.”
I love the result, as I do other eighteen from the same series. 7 Now keep in mind, folks, this is long before the blessing and the curse of artificial intelligence (AI). Just as those of the 17th century painted to ‘fool the eye’, Jon used the modern equivalent of the artist’s paints and palette to painstakingly create something unique, evocative, and truly beautiful to behold. I feel privileged to have his work grace our April cover and hope it will be the first of many in the future.
***No foolin’ — that’s it from me for now, thank goodness. Have any thoughts on April Fools — or any other kind of fool — you would like to share? Please let me know, or let me know what you think about what the rest of BluFly has on offer this month.8 Thank you so much for reading and also for engaging with BluFly’s posts on Bluesky and LinkedIn.9 It’s always a delight to hear from each and every one of you.
Fair winds and blue skies.
